The 100-year-old Bingo Lover

10th December, 2007

Yesterday, Violet ‘Dot’ Michael’s celebrated a milestone birthday, and we aren’t exactly talking about her 18th. 100 years and still going strong, Dot’s biggest complaint is that she’s getting forgetful, but her quick wit is certainly still there. Now a full century old, Dot joked, “That’s pretty high. I’ll go along with it and see what happens.”

One of five daughters, Dot lived in Maryland, where she met her husband, who “followed her around ‘til she said ‘yes’”, according to her daughter-in-law Sandy Michaels.

Dot and her husband had five children themselves, two boys and three girls. Dot’s favourite activities still are watching baseball on TV (she’s a Baltimore Orioles fan), and playing bingo. Most of the time when she plays bingo she says she “donates her money” because she rarely wins.

The sports lover and self-proclaimed “bingo addict” received Jim Palmer and Cal Ripken signed baseballs from the Orioles themselves for her 95th birthday. This year, a birthday celebration was scheduled at the Potomac Fish and Game Club, where her 5 children, 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren are expected to all be in attendance.

“I’ve had a pretty good life,” said Dot.
