South Africa Moves towards Online Bingo
23rd September, 2007
The South African Parliament has given approval for the implementation of the National Gambling Amendment Bill (NGAB). This policy change was brought forward by the South African Department of Trade and Industry and is aimed at the future of Internet and interactive gaming operations.
Under the new terms of the proposed legislation would make it so that online gaming providers, online bingo included, will have to obtain a national license in which probity and technical checks will be part of the process. Once the act comes into effect online bingo games will be free to open house in the South African Republic.
The new legislation is a means of protecting players, ensuring financial transactions in the industry and preventing the problem of underage gambling. The only problem the legislation has yet to solve is are taxation issues, something land-based operators want to make sure maintains a level playing field.
