Petition Against Video Bingo

21st May, 2008

Citizens for a Better Community, a group, is attempting to influence the November ballot to turn the decision on video bingo towards banning it altogether. The two Hammond lawyers, Doug Brown and Duncan Kemp, have presented the petition to the City Council yesterday evening. The council accepted the petition but did not comment.

Brown admitted to have been officially presented with 1,901 signatures. Kemp did not speak about the case.

The case is now awaiting the city attorney and council clerk to bring the signatures to the Tangipahoa Parish registrar of voters. City Attorney Andre Coudrain told the council that the TP registrar of voters now need to approve the signatures for the petition to move further. He also stated that Registrar John Russell confirmed that the signatures can receive the certificate of the authenticity in the 30 day period.

It has been over three years now that video bingo is on top of the agenda in Hammond. The opposition moves started when the video bingo was approved in 2005 and the games were officially allowed in Hammond.

The decision in 2005 have started off the chain of events, with Bingo Alley, the city’s third video bingo parlor, which in terms encouraged the group to organise the petition and start an opposing move against the video bingo.
