Tracey Claire, the only female in the competition, was named runner up in the recent contest in search of the best bingo caller in the UK.

Claire, who has been playing bingo for 20 years has been a caller for the past seven and works at the Stockland Green club in Streetly Road, Erdington. The 44-year-old mother-of-two, was up against seven male finalists and was happy to come in second

“It was an absolutely fantastic event and a wonderful experience. I was so pleased to have got to the finals and the support was great,” Claire said. “Obviously I was very nervous, but I think I did well against the seven men. I am absolutely shattered after all the excitement and I think it’s just about getting back to the normal bingo calling now. Everybody enjoyed themselves and I’m pleased that I can say I’m the second best Gala caller in the country.”

Michael Edwards, the winner of the event, was awarded a trophy, a cash prize and bragging rights that he is the best bingo caller in the entire United Kingdom.

“This competition, which is now in its fifth year, emphasises the high regard in which we hold our cllers, who are fundamental in our customers’ enjoyment of the game,” said a spokesman for Gala Bingo. “Being a caller takes great skill and, as ever, the standard of entrants this year was incredibly high.”

The competition was held last Sunday at the Kingsbury Road club in Erdington in front of a crowd of 800 bingo enthusiasts from around the country.
