Mecca Bingo and Whizz Kids Fundraising Results
19th August, 2009
Mecca Bingo and the charity whizz kids have been working together for years to help disabled young people across the country through Mecca bingo’s land based clubs and online.
Many people hear about charities efforts and ways to get involved to raise cash. But never see the results of it. Here’s a heartwarming story of the good partnerships such as that of Mecca bingo and Whizz kids can do.
Do to Mecca bingo players and whizz kids, five year old Daniel Rafferty is now able to play out with his friends, something he couldn’t enjoy before. This is due to global development delay which means that he has poor co ordination making him unsteady on his feet and tires out quickly.
Daniel was diagnosed when he was 16months old as he has an extra chromosome which caused him to be unable to walk until he was 2 and a half and continues to have a lack of strength in his legs meaning that he can’t ride a normal bike.
Due to the efforts of bingo fans, Daniel now has a specially adapted trike which helps Daniel get out and about on his own.
Mecca bingo raised over £280,000 in 2008 for whizz kids, with figures set to be even bigger for 2009. Fund raising activities have included climbing Mt. Snowdon, parachute jumps, Pantomimes, Collections and Bingo Dave getting his legs waxed.
Mrs Rafferty, Daniels mother, said: “We are all over the moon. This is the first bike Daniel has been able to ride by himself and he loves it. It gives him freedom.”
The trike should help strengthen the five year olds development allowing him to strengthen his legs and improve co ordination.
