Five bingo players win £1,000 each

31st January, 2008

Five bingo players have called the full house at the same time and shared the prize money which made them £1,000 richer each.

Debbie Knight, 48, from Anstey heights was one of the winners. Her husband was the one filling in the cards on a daily basis.

This is what she said after she received the news of the win: "Paul filled in the card and when he told me we'd won I didn't believe him. Then he told me to ring the Mercury to check the numbers and I couldn't believe it. It's the first time I can remember winning anything, so it's great. We're thinking of using the money for a holiday."

75-year-old Peter McCaffrey from Thurnby Lodge was another winner of a shared Jackpot. This is what he said on the day: “I've been playing bingo games in newspapers for 30 years and the Mercury bingo game was the first I've ever won. It was a big surprise."

Peter’s family is certainly going to have some treats, according to the man and his wife, Peggy. "I've got nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, so if we split it between the family it wouldn't go far," said the lucky bingo winner.
