Cancer Patient Wins Big at Bingo
7th November, 2007
For 50-year-old Julie Bowes-Shorten of Norwich, £100,000 couldn’t have come at a better time. The grandmother of four is currently suffering from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and has been receiving chemotherapy for the past five years.
Due to the pain of the treatment, she gave up work and now spends five days in the hospital every 3 weeks. Despite the treatment, the cancer has left remission three times since first diagnosed in 2002. The pain of the chemo treatment deprives Bowes-Shorten of energy, making it hard to always put a smile on.
It was nothing but smiles the other night however, when she went to the Mecca Bingo club to play her usual game of bingo with her friends. She called house on 40 numbers, but had no idea that she’d be winning £100,000.
“I was stunned,” she said. “My friend had to repeat it three times before the result sank in.”
Also she doesn’t yet know what she will do with the money, the win has given her an inspirational lift that she so much deserved.
“I’m not going to let anything prevent me from doing what I want to,” she exclaimed. “Not even cancer.”
