Bingo workers sky dive for charity

13th August, 2008

Bingo workers at Mecca Bingo will be headed toward the heavens to jump out of a plane, and people are donating money for it.

It sounds strange, but the latest charity event from Mecca Bingo has its workers taking part in a sky dive for a fundraising challenge where workers from across the country will be taking a leap of faith from a perfectly good plane in the name of charity.

“Everyone has been so generous with their donations,” said Anna Mason, a participant who works at the Mecca Bingo in Blyth. “But I would urge anyone who hasn’t already donated to dig deep. After all, it’s not every day we offer to throw ourselves out of a plane.”

Workers at Mecca Bingos from across the country will be taking part in their latest effort to raise funds, with their goal being $250,000 for the year.

“We’ve been holding a number of fund raising events over the past months and this is probably one of the most exciting and certainly the most nerve-racking,” said Mike Travis, another participant who works at the Mecca Bingo in Blackpool. “Colleagues, club members, friends and family have all been extremely generous so far with their donations.”

The funds will go to support the Whizz-Kidz, which is a children’s mobility charity. An astonishing £100,000 has already been raised, with many more fundraising events to come, including workers wearing rollerboots for a day at the Mecca Bingo club in Blyth.

“The charity is almost 100 per cent reliant on voluntary funds so events like this are really important,” said Ruth Owen, chief executive of Whizz Kidz. “Around 70,000 kids nationally are in need of vital mobility equipment, and everyone will know someone in their community or family that could benefit from our work. We are thrilled to hear about the skydiving event and would like to wish everyone a safe landing.”
