Bingo Industry Triumphs In Snowfall
13th January, 2010
The ongoing bad weather conditions throughout the UK have caused great concern in some industry sectors including: retail, travel and entertainment. These industry sectors have seen a steep drop in business as many members of the public have opted to stay indoors rather than brave the arctic like conditions. However the weather is having an opposite affect among the online bingo industry.
Industry experts have commented that the snow has benefitted the online gaming sector with people find alternative entertainment within their own homes rather than going out.
Greg Johnson, an analyst for Shore Capital said, “The consumer side is not as bad as far as previous years are concerned when the bingo industry was hit by the smoking ban and wasn’t a growth industry. If you look historically at bingo they have seen sharp declines in spend.”
The Rank Group, the owners of Mecca Bingo announced a 3% rise in sales. Johnson continued, “Rank has seen improvements in recent weeks and its online division has gone up.” Since the bad weather the company has reported a 29% increase in the amount of people playing bingo at their sites.
Another popular online bingo site, wink bingo, has also seen an increase in player figures, recording a particular rise in first time players. The site has seen a 50% increase in those playing their budget bingo games.
“With the bad weather, people seem to be looking more for ways of keeping themselves entertained indoors”, commented Maurice Karpes, the Marketing Director for Wink Bingo. “Online gaming gives them a chance not only to play inexpensively and maybe win, but also to interact with other players. We had a pyjama party in one of our onsite chat rooms last week and we had literally hundreds of players talking to each other online.”
