Baker Council Wants Video Bingo

9th April, 2008

Baker council feels it would be wise to make video bingo gambling legal in the city. The decision to discuss such prospects have been made on Tuesday and is now scheduled for Monday 1:30 p.m. for a “work session”.

Councilman Fred O. Russell has spoken very much in favour of video bingo game to be legal in the city. He justified his view by outlining the financial benefits city and local charitable organisations would gain from the gaming revenues. He also talked about specific regulations such gaming activity would have to be followed by to avoid illegal or unlawful causes being satisfied by video bingo.

Nevertheless, council members Charles Vincent and J.E. “Trae” Welch were unsure about Russell’s proposition and decided to call for examining state legal requirements for video bingo that they suggested happens during a work session, which should according to them be held specifically for this matter. Vincent and Welch felt it was necessary to hold such session prior to a hearing and vote on the proposal. Russell and A.J. Walls voted against the session being held, but they were overcooled as minority.

Vincent expressed particularly negative attitude towards introducing video bingo. He said that there was nothing he could see coming from video bingo, but “ill”, entirely due to the fact that it is a form of gambling.

Welch said that the only reasonable decision would be to see what the city thinks about the video bingo proposition. He mentioned that it is very important for the city to be made known of all impacts bingo operation could have, both positive and negative. This, according to Welch is vital for the city voters to be able to make a balanced and thoughtful decision.

The issue continues to be considered.
